Shear Capacities for Wood-Framed Diaphragms
Last updated October 30, 2024

Based on SDPWS 2015 (Table 4.2). All specifications based on min. 19/32 floor sheathing, 12″ field nailing. All SDPWS shear values multiplied by 0.5 * (1 – (0.5 – 0.42)) to convert to ASD and adjust for SPF framing. Unblocked shear values show All other Cases / Case 1, in order to achieve higher sheathing each loading direction must be analyzed separately.
Nails | Blocking | Joist | Nail Spacing | Vs (plf) | Ga (k/in) (ply) |
0.148×3 | Unblocked | 2x | 6” all supported edges | 197/262 | 8.5 |
0.148×3 | Unblocked | 3x | 6” all supported edges | 220/294 | 7.5 |
0.148×3 | Blocked | 2x | 6” all edges | 294 | 14 |
0.148×3 | Blocked | 3x | 6” all edges | 331 | 12 |
0.148×3 | Blocked | 2x | 4” diaphragm boundary and continuous panel edges, 6” other panel edges | 391 | 9.5 |
0.148×3 | Blocked | 3x | 4” diaphragm boundary and continuous panel edges, 6” other panel edges | 441 | 8 |
0.148×3 | Blocked | 2x | 2 1/2” diaphragm boundary and continuous panel edges, 4” other panel edges | 588 | 12 |
0.148×3 | Blocked | 3x | 2 1/2” diaphragm boundary and continuous panel edges, 4” other panel edges | 662 | 11 |
